The Istiqlal Mosque, designed by architect Frederich Silaban, is a testament to Indonesia’s journey to independence. Silaban’s vision was to create a mosque that would symbolize the unity and diversity of the nation – the mosque’s construction began in 1961 and was completed in 1978, becoming the largest mosque in Southeast Asia.

Adjacent to Istiqlal, the Cathedral Church, formally known as the Jakarta Cathedral, was designed by architect Christiani, affiliated with the architectural firm NV van de Linde and Dolfing. Construction commenced in 1891, and the cathedral was consecrated in 1901, showcasing neo-gothic architectural influences. The Cathedral’s presence next to the Istiqlal Mosque exemplifies the commitment to religious harmony in Indonesia.
