Tourist Destination
Kelawi Village successfully earned a place among Indonesia’s Advanced Tourism Villages after competing with 4,573 other tourism villages across the country in the 2023 ADWI (Anugerah Desa Wisata Indonesia) event organized by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenparekraf RI).
Located in Bakauheni Sub-district, South Lampung Regency, the village also received a MURI (Indonesian World Record Museum) award as the first tourism village to cultivate its own variety of avocado, known as the Kelawi Village Avocado. One of the village’s main tourist attractions is Minang Rua Beach, a prominent destination that draws visitors with its natural beauty and unique experiences. Minang Rua Beach has a coastline stretching about 10 kilometers. The uniqueness of this beach lies in its sandy shore, which was naturally formed due to the impact of the construction of the Bakauheni – Terbanggi Besar toll road, resulting in natural reclamation.
In addition to beach tourism, visitors can also enjoy various natural attractions scattered around the area, such as Green Canyon, Underwater Park, Jamara Waterfall, Khaja Saka Waterfall, Batu Alif, Goa Lalay (Lalay Cave), and a Cliff Jumping Spot for those who enjoy adrenaline-pumping activities. Moreover, the beach is managed by a local tourism awareness group known as POKDARWIS (Kelompok Sadar Wisata) and is one of the few beaches in Indonesia that has its own sea turtle conservation site. This is because the beach often serves as a nesting site for sea turtles during their migration.
During the turtle nesting season, members of POKDARWIS stay up at night to guard and protect the eggs, ensuring they are cared for until they hatch. Once the eggs hatch, the baby turtles (tukik) are released back into the ocean when they are strong enough to survive. If lucky, visitors may even get the chance to participate in the baby turtle release event, making their visit even more memorable.
